This online book is very interesting:
http://ia360612.us.archive.org/2/items/2edhistoryphilosoph00jencrich/2edhistoryphilosoph00jencrich.pdf
I took a couple notes so far:
"It is a melancholy and an humiliating fact that the opinions of most people are determined more by what others around them think and say than by what they believe themselves. They are not accustomed to the proper exercise of their own reason, and do not follow the convictions of their own minds. Yet there are some who dare to think and act for themselves ; and into the hands of a few such I doubt not these pages will fall : and to all such I most heartily commend them.”
Pg 41
“Marriage perpetuates the human race; lays the foundations of organized society; promotes industry; accumulates wealth; cultivates the arts; and maintains religion. It builds the house, tills the soil, supports the family, and fosters every charitable and benevolent enterprise”
Pg 43
“But all nature and all revelation has demonstrated that [God] is a benevolent being, and it is both impious and absurd to believe that his laws have made no adequate provision for everyone to be married who wishes to be”
Pg44
“It is, therefore, demonstrated that any form of society which fails to provide for the marriage of all is a defective system, and opposed to the natural, inherent, and inalienable rights of man [and woman]
Pg 50
“On the whole, therefore, women are practically marriageable ten years younger than men are, a period which constitutes a third part of the average duration of adult life. From these two causes alone, - the greater number of women, and their being marriageable so much younger, - the proportion of marriageable women to marriageable men would be about two to one… But the practical difference is still greater. For after men have arrived at adult manhood, and have aquired the means of supporting a family, many of them refuse marriage”
Pg 52
“”There is not one woman in a million who would not be married if she could have a chance. How do I know? Just as I know that the stars are now shining in the sky, though it is high noon. I never saw a star at noonday; but I know it is the nature of stars to shine in the sky, and the sky to hold its stars. Genius or fool, rich or poor, beauty or the beast, if marriage were what it should be, what God meant it to be, what even, with the worlds present possibilities, it might be, it would be the Elysium, the sole, complete Elysium of woman, and yes, of man. Greatness, glory, usefulness, happiness, await her otherwheres; but here alone all her powers, all her being can find full play. No condition, no character even, can quite hide the gleam of the sacred fire; but on the household hearth it joins the warmth of earth to the hues of heaven. Brilliant, dazzling, vivid, a beacon and a blessing her light may be; but only a happy home blends the prismatic rays into a soft, serene whiteness, that floods the world with divine illumination. Without wifely and motherly love, a part of her nature must remain enclosed, a spring shut up, a fountain sealed. ” – Gail Hamilton”
Pg 58
“We have always accustomed ourselves to believe that polygamy originated in barbarism; that it is perpetuated by barbarians only, and that it panders to the basest and most depraved of human passions. But let us now think for ourselves. For one, I claim that right.”
Pg 65
“Is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob the Christian’s God, or is he not?”

The Photo
There are some shocking pictures in the public domain.
This was my original reaction:
"Jaw dropped to the floor, eyeballs rechecked over and over"
There was a warrant for Warren Jeffs DNA alleging he fathered a child with a fourteen year old girl.
In "The Coming Crisis" are these words:
"And even God himself, the true God, will contribute to put means and instruments in [Satan's] way and at hand for his use, so that he can have a full trial of his strength and cunning, with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish."
Many FLDS and others believe that the photos are faked. I do not know. It is rather impossible to defend those pictures as a marriage in most people’s eyes, and I won't. I don't even want to. I don't know anyone in the FLDS who want to have to sanction it; except perhaps the girl.
Although the pictures and the possible news coming from the warrant is incredibly shocking; the warrant is incorrect in its assumption that FLDS marriages are consummated immediately. That is not true whatsoever; in fact it is very, very rare.
The FLDS religion has no minimum age of marriage written in the scriptures, but I believe that the law is always at least attempted to be followed concerning that. It is possible that Warren Jeffs is the father of the child born to a 15 year old wife. But it was in 2005 when 14 year olds were allowed to get married in Texas, even though they were obviously not "legally" married.
I want to be clear that I do not take the warrant at face value, as they have been wrong on most of the ages of the "minors" in this great debacle already, so it is possible and I HOPE it is true that the "15 year old" mother is in fact an adult, or his daughter married to a much younger man. The photo's themselves on the other hand are pointless (though shocking), even if there was a sealing, except to get mad people madder. If even true, the likely reason for the sealing to happen at the time was because she was inspired that he would be gone for a long time. In the FLDS faith that is very real.
Marriage in most peoples eyes is a legal matter and is sexual, but that is not necessarily so for the FLDS. Marriage is only the beginning of a courtship, but it is an eternal one. Let me help you understand the prospective.
In our Mormon history, just before the Saints were driven away from their Temple in Illinois to come to Utah there were many sealing’s of very young girls and some young boys. Mosiah Hancock and Mary were both 11, but were told to not live as man and wife until 16.
In the early part of this century a 12 year old orphan girl was sealed to the Patriarch who adopted her, but they didn't have children until she was 18. I only remember this story as a family folklore, I have no documentation or verification that it happened.
THAT is the last time I ever heard of a sealing of a girl younger than Elissa Wall. Hence the shock I felt, and feel. Elissa was the youngest I heard of being married, and she was fourteen, and THAT shocked me. She looked older than my eighteen year old wife was, and we got married over two years before.
In Elissa Walls book (According to Salt Lake Tribunes Brooke Adams) she said that she and her husband went to see Warren Jeffs over a two years after they were married, and he suggested that they should try to have a child. By this time she was 16.
He had no idea they had already been trying.
Also according to Ms Adams, in Carolyn Jessop’s work of fiction (loosely based on a “true story”) she told of a certain lady and her marriage with the prophet, never consummated after ten years. (Like I would know, but Carolyn did, right?)
Link to Brook Adams blog : See “The Photo” and “More on Stolen Innocence”
To give some personal details [that I might regret]:
My brother and I got married within two weeks of each other. He knew who his wife was and she was 23. I did not know my wife and she was 18. (My father said "You robbed the cradle!" as she looked 14) My brother and his wife had their second child a month after we had our first. nuff said
And do you know what, despite everything else? Even if that photo turns out to be real, and they put that girl in a foster home based on that photo evidence alone. Do you think you will ever convince her that she is not married to him? There is no way. She will serve her time in prison and feel it an honor.
Just realize that even Elissa's older sister Becky, who sat on the stand and railed against Warren Jeffs, STILL believed that she will be married to Rulon Jeffs in the Celestial Kingdom even after her child was born. I heard her husband on the phone with his father complaining about it.
Strange religion? Sure you can argue that.
But abusive? No way.
In the FLDS, girls under 17 rarely have children, but even when they do it is unlike teenage pregnancy in the rest of the United States; for she is MARRIED and the CHILD is NOT an ACCIDENT. The PARENTS agree to the marriage, the GIRL desires it, and it is ETERNAL. Life for a mother is not oppressive in the FLDS, it is very rewarding and the possibilities for other interests besides motherhood are not limited in a communal family.
In the FLDS, girls do not get married until they want to. And they are not forced to marry any particular man. The name is an inspired suggestion if not inspired to her directly, it is not a commandment. This is true despite what you have heard from bitter ex wives. No marriage is ever forced, and no marriage is ever performed unless the girl wants to get married. And no abuse is condoned. Period.
You will never understand unless you read Aunt Martha's story of the life of Flora Jessop and know it is true. Reading the story broke my heart again. My sister Fawn's story is similar (minus the sex) and yet most people still believe she fled a "forced marriage" My father treated her the same way as dear Uncle Fred did Flora. Yet when she took her to Phoenix, Flora had Fawn give an affidavit saying she was "abused”, “faced a forced marriage” and “feared for blood atonement", despite the fact that Fawn has over ten older sisters and not one was married under eighteen or ever felt that they were forced. The CPS and authorities in Arizona investigated my fathers home and interviewed my other sisters that lived there, the charges were dropped, and Flora was ordered to stay away from Fawn. That part of the story never made the paper.
Someone said:
"In my opinion, this is one of the main problems the FLDS have; they see themselves as above the law."
The FLDS are the only minority left in the country where the laws have been and continuously are directly written to persecute them. The religion predates every law that they break, and each law has been written directly to stop the FLDS religion. Other than that, they are the most law abiding citizens in the United States. (Those who are obeying the religion)
Marriage in most peoples eyes is a legal matter and is sexual, but not necessarily so for the FLDS. I couldn’t care less if gay people can get a piece of paper from the civil authorities. That is no different to me than starting a business. Civil marriages are not binding in the church, and they have never desired to make polygamy "legal". The problem is this central tenant of obedience to the FLDS religion is "criminal".
The First Amendment should cover that, but bigotry has a much more powerful lobby.

The Kiss!
"PICTURE REMOVED" (Although it was an adorable picture of a one year old girl planting a big kiss on a newborn baby boy) I want to apologize for not contacting the parents first.
Media report:
"Breaking News! Highly reliable ex members of the polygamist cult explained to us that this photograph clearly shows assault of a minor, there is a hair on a bed to prove it"
Other media report:
"It is obvious by the photo that female members of the cult are perpatrators in the systematic teachings to the boys that assault is going to happen in 40 to 5o years."
Nancy Grace:
"This is outrageous! That baby looks happy to get the kiss! Flora, you went through this, how did you cope?"
Flora:
"The bruises hidden under my long hair dulled the pain"

Top 5 lies needs a 6th
After my perusal of the comments from many an article on the news sites I would like to refute one big gargantuan lie.
LOST BOYS
The assertion is they are gotten rid of to keep them from "competing for brides"
I already addressed this in these posts:
http://fldsview.blogspot.com/2008/05/lost-and-found-boys.html
http://fldsview.blogspot.com/2008/05/few-questions-from-bored.html
http://fldsview.blogspot.com/2008/05/flds-mother.html
Regarding the underage boys who did leave, this is the truth:
They were not abandoned without resources
Their parents did want to keep them home or at least in a safe environment.
Their parents were never "required" to abandon them.
All of them left on their own.
Regarding the majority who were young adult men who left:
Most left on their own without being asked, but some were asked out
They had jobs and income, except the freeloaders who had enough training to get one.
They KNEW what the requirements were to stay, and did not do them.
The overwhelming majority of "Lost Boys" were adults.
The term "Lost Boy" was coined by Shem and Dan Fischer, who were seeking ways to sue the church and the UEP out of vindictive hatred. They gathered the "boys" through word of mouth to Salt Lake for a party and a payday; they came and sat on the steps of the Capital building in Salt Lake City. Out of their so-called "400" they found six who were as bitter as they were. Most of the rest are now insulted by the term.
This "Lost Boy" Lawsuit was one of four lawsuits filed at the same time against Warren Jeffs and the United Effort Plan (A trust with no assets except the homes and property secured for members in good standing in the FLDS church, in an effort to live in the "United Order" or "All things in Common")
The cost of defending these lawsuits, filed in the court of a fairly new feminist judge named Denise Lindberg, who I believe was previously an attorney for Dan Fischer’s businesses; would have been extremely burdensome to the FLDS people.
The judge has since confiscated all of the homes and property and handed it over to her feduciary Bruce Wisan. To "protect" the "beneficiaries" of the UEP from Warren Jeffs.
His personal "fees" have given him ownership of the large Harker Ranch in Beryl, Utah that was donated to the church several years before. He is now seeking to steal the YFZ property in Texas as well.

FLDS Statement on Marriage
The church's policies regarding marriage have been widely misrepresented and misunderstood. Indeed, much of the misinformation circulating on this subject seems designed intentionally to fuel the flames of prejudice against the church.
The church's practices in this regard continue a long tradition of marriage in this country that would have been found to have been unremarkable in 19th century America. In the FLDS church all marriages are consensual. The church insists on appropriate consent, including that of the woman and the man in all circumstances.
Nevertheless the church is clarifying its policy toward marriage. Therefore, in the future, the church commits that it will not preside over the marriage of any woman under the age of legal consent in the jurisdiction in which the marriage takes place. The church will counsel families that they neither request nor consent to any underage marriages. This policy will apply church-wide.
The church believes in purity, cleanliness, and innocence. Our children and families are the cornerstones of our lives and our religion. We hope that this modest clarification in policy will alleviate recent concerns and allow the church and its families to reside in peace among our neighbors.

The War in Heaven
A war! In Heaven!
War!
Heaven!
How can it be? Heaven is where God dwells, where the angels dwell; where all of Gods children who are and ever were dwelt. Heaven is the place of peace, the place where love abounds.
War! That means battle or fight! That means some beings sought to destroy others!
The war in heaven, an amazingly astounding occurrence that we were all involved with before this world even began to be populated.
The numerous hosts of heaven, who are they? They are none other than our Heavenly Fathers little children. Our Heavenly Mothers beloved little ones begotten by them in the Celestial Kingdom. This great battle, this war, caused one third of these children to be cast down, never to even have the opportunity to take bodies. Some of these, our own spiritual brothers and sisters, we knew very, very well, they were our closest friends. We loved them very much, and they once loved us. Yet they turned against us, and against their own Father!
Why? What would cause children to hate their own Father? Not just their earthly father, but God the Eternal Father! Why would they do it? Did not they see Him and know He loved them dearly? What would cause them to hate their own Father? It is amazing, yet it is true.
In forming this earth that we are all a part of; Elohiem gathered us all together and told us of this earth and the wonderful opportunity it was to give us. To have physical bodies, and to perhaps have them forever! We were all overjoyed, for that is what our Parents have! Then we were told of the great sacrifice that it required of our Father and mothers Eve. They had to come here first and fall! He and Eve had to fall from their Celestial condition down to a Telestial condition to give us the opportunity to have bodies. We so loved our Father!
We were then told that we had to fall also. We had to partake of this fall, and though through it we would be given bodies for our spirits, we would also have to die, and lose them again, and to be shut out of heaven forever. Never to enter the Celestial Kingdom again. We could not have our bodies again or enter the Celestial kingdom unless there was an atonement made; an atonement for the fall of our Father, and an atonement for us. Only through this atonement could we have a resurrection and have our bodies back again after we die. Only through this atonement do we have the power of repentance, the reason for us purify our minds our bodies. Only through this atonement could we become like God.
This atonement required a God to die, to suffer for all of our sins! Who would perform such an act as this? Who will atone for these little children of Michael's? Up steps Lucifer, the son of the Morning, a great one, whom we all knew very well. He said “Behold I, send me, I will be Thy Son, and I will redeem all mankind, that one soul shall not be lost, and surely I will do it, wherefore give me Thine honor.” He had a better plan, he believed, a plan for him to atone for us, but he did not want to give us free will in the flesh, so not one of us would sin, and not one of us would be shut out of the Celestial Kingdom. One third of the hosts of heaven rejoiced!
Wouldn't that be wonderful? They tried to explain. All of us in the Celestial Kingdom! Not one lost! All would become gods and angels without exception, and therefore the atonement would not be an atonement for sins, for none could sin. This plan was completely opposite of reason, of principle, of truth, and of freedom; and yet one third of the hosts of heaven believed it to be the most wonderfully kind and loving and the most generous thing to do.
Then said Jehovah, our Grand Father in heaven, even the creator of our Universe; He said “Father, thy will be done, and the glory be Thine forever” Those of us who understood then were overwhelmed in amazement at his love for us. To Live and to Die to allow us to have free will, and to suffer for our sins repented of, to suffer for all to gain our bodies again! Of course Jehovah’s plan was chosen, for it was the only true plan. Lucifer rebelled, and tried to force his plan anyway, and one third of our brothers and sisters rebelled with him.
There was a war in heaven! One third of the hosts of heaven were cast down to earth without bodies. And with them was their leader, Lucifer, who is Satan. Their former love for all became hatred for truth, and they are now here trying to get us to be as miserable as they are. They hate us now more than we loved them. For they cannot have bodies of their own, and must remain as spirits.
There was a war in heaven. And by it there is a perfect plan, a plan for us to enter the Celestial Kingdom again with bodies like our Heavenly Father and Mothers. By overcoming our former friends who know our weaknesses, and overcoming this flesh. Taking full advantage of the atonement of our Lord Jesus Christ. Eternal Bodies. Eternal Life.
War!
Heaven!
How can it be? Heaven is where God dwells, where the angels dwell; where all of Gods children who are and ever were dwelt. Heaven is the place of peace, the place where love abounds.

Lest we Forget
Ruth Edna Fischer was first allowed to see her 2-year-old daughter, from whom she had been separated after the raid on their polygamist ranch in Texas, at the child’s hospital room. The child had been taken there because of severe dehydration and malnutrition, Ms. Fischer said.“Hannah looked like a little orphan sitting on the couch,” Ms. Fischer said. “Her hair was stringy and she was in a diaper, a pair of dirty socks and a hospital gown.”
The second visit two weeks later at a state office in Angleton, Tex., was worse. The girl would not even meet her mother’s gaze. “It was like she hardly remembered me,” said Ms. Fischer, who has four children in state custody.
Many child-welfare experts across the nation, who have as a group watched the high-profile Texas case closely, say the raid on the polygamist ranch diverged sharply from the recommended practices both in Texas and elsewhere in the country.
They say a growing body of research supports the contention of the mothers that forceful removal can have both significant short-term and long-lasting harm, particularly for younger children. Some studies have found that the wide-ranging effects include anxiety, extreme distrust of strangers and, in the future, higher rates of juvenile incarceration.
Through their lawyers and in personal interviews, the mothers have been spilling tales of toddlers who have forgotten toilet training and 3-year-olds who cling to them frantically during visits.
“They made no effort to keep the children there at the ranch,” said Johana Scot, executive director of the Parent Guidance Center in Austin, which helps advocate for the rights of parents who have had their children taken into foster care.
“And even worse, they did not give the families individual hearings, which they are also required to do by the code,” Ms. Scot said. “They’ve really botched this.”
“Breaking all of the ties to several parental figures and siblings, and taking them to a remote and unfamiliar place raises many red flags about trauma and its effect on children,” Mr. Cohen said
Experts say younger children, who often do not have a sense of the passage of time, can be particularly hard hit by such separations. About 100 of the children removed from the sect were 2 years old or younger.
Shelly Greco, a court-appointed lawyer for a 14-month-old girl removed from the ranch, says the child had been up crying uncontrollably many nights because she was so abruptly weaned.
But Lori Jessop, one of a few mothers from the ranch who were reunited with their children in a court-brokered agreement last Friday, said she had already seen the impact of this situation. Ms. Jessop said her three children were suffering from night terrors and a fear of strangers, among other problems.
She said that when her 4-year-old daughter recently saw a picture of a bus, like the one used to transport the children when they were in foster care, she started to cry.
“It’s affected her a lot,” Ms. Jessop said. “Everybody that she sees, especially adult men, she calls them policemen.”

Keep At Your Work
"The Lord has given to every man his work. It is every man's business to do his work, and the devil's business to hinder him if he can. Be sure as God has given you a work to do, Satan will try to hinder you if he can. He may throw you from it; he may present other things more promising; he may allure you by worldly prospects; He may assault with slander, torment you with false accusations, set you at work defending your character, employ pious persons to lie about you, editors to assail you, officials to accuse you, and excellent men to slander you. You may have Pilate and Herod, Ananias and Caiaphas, all combined against you, and Judas standing by, ready to sell you for thirty pieces of silver; and you may wonder why all these things come upon you. Can you not see that the whole thing is brought about through the craft of the devil, to draw you off from your work and hinder your obedience to God?
"Keep about your work. Do not flinch because the lion roars; do not stop to stone the devil's dog; do not fool away your time chasing the devil's rabbits. Do your work. Let liars lie, let sectarians quarrel, let corporations resolve, let editors publish, let the devil do his worst; but see to it that nothing hinder you from fulfilling the work that God has given you.
"He has not sent you to make money. He has not commanded you to get rich. He has never bidden you defend your character. He has never set you at work to contradict that which Satan and his servants may start to peddle. If you do these things, you will do nothing else; you will be at work for yourself, and not for the Lord.
"Keep about your work. Let your aim be as steady as a star. Let the world brawl and bubble. You may be assaulted, wronged, insulted, slandered, wounded, and rejected; you may be abused by foes, forsaken by friends, and despised and rejected of men; but see to it with steadfast determination, with unfaltering zeal, that you pursue the great purpose of your life and object of your being until at last you can say, "I have finished the work which Thou gavest me to do."
